
TikTok has announced an additional investment of $200,000 in ad credits to support AI media literacy programmes across Sub-Saharan Africa, unveiled at the platform’s third annual Safer Internet Summit held in Nairobi on March 10th.
The two-day summit, held under the theme SaferTogether: Innovation and Safety, brought together government officials, regulators, online safety partners, and industry leaders to tackle evolving digital safety challenges across the region. The event has previously been held in Ghana and Cape Town.
The new investment builds on TikTok’s initial $2 million AI Literacy Fund launched in November 2025, which supported 20 global nonprofits. In Sub-Saharan Africa, three organisations are already benefiting from the programme — Mtoto News in Kenya, which creates educational content helping young people engage responsibly with AI; Africa Check, which is expanding fact-checking work across Nigeria, South Africa, and Kenya to help audiences identify AI-generated misinformation and deepfakes; and CJID, whose independent fact-checking platform DUBAWA works to combat information disorder across the continent.
“We are partnering with trusted local organisations that communities already know and rely on, because their expertise and deep local connections are essential to making AI literacy programmes truly impactful,” said Valiant Richey, Global Head of Partnerships, Elections and Market Integrity at TikTok.
Cabinet Secretary for Information Communication and Technology Hon. William Kabogo, who opened the summit, said the gathering reflected the government’s commitment to responsible AI governance and regional digital partnerships. The summit also covered TikTok’s content moderation efforts, with the platform reporting that over 14 million videos were removed across Sub-Saharan Africa in Q3 2025, with 96.7 percent detected and removed proactively through automated technology.
The summit concluded with attendees committing to continue advancing digital safety initiatives across the region.
