Ghana’s Afro-fusion sensation Gyakie has released her long awaited debut album “After Midnight”, a deeply personal 17 track collection that establishes her as a major force in contemporary African music.
The project serves as an intimate journey through themes of growth, love and self-discovery.
Known for blending Afro-R&B with highlife and alternative sounds, Gyakie uses this debut to showcase her full artistic range.
The daughter of highlife legend Nana Acheampong, Gyakie has music in her DNA, but “After Midnight” proves she’s carving her own distinct path. The album’s concept stems from her nocturnal creative process, with most tracks conceived and recorded during late-night studio sessions.
“Almost all the songs on the album were recorded after midnight,” Gyakie shares. “It is within those hours that I find my best inspiration to write. The peace and quiet, the sounds from the birds, the serenity, everything about that time fuels my creativity.”
The album spans multiple moods and genres, from introspective ballads to upbeat party tracks, all unified by Gyakie’s distinctive vocals and honest songwriting. Among the standout moments is “Y2K Luv” featuring Omar Sterling, where she samples her father’s music, creating a beautiful bridge between generations of Ghanaian artistry.
International collaborations feature prominently, with American R&B star 6LACK joining Gyakie on “Damn U”, while UK talents Kojey Radical and Headie One contribute to tracks that blend African and diaspora sounds.
Regional powerhouses Shatta Wale and Young Jonn also appear, creating what Gyakie calls “a convergence of cultures that speaks to the universality of music and its ability to bring people together.”
The album builds on singles “Sankofa” and “Unconditional”, both of which hinted at the emotional depth found throughout the full project. Director Alex Piper, known for his work with Rema and Travis Scott, created a narrative trailer that captures the album’s midnight aesthetic.
“This album is about becoming,” Gyakie says. “It’s about embracing all the versions of myself, the soft parts, the strong parts, the past, the present and the dreams I’m chasing. I hope people find pieces of themselves in these songs.”
Since breaking through with her “Seed” EP and the platinum hit “Forever”, Gyakie has steadily built an impressive portfolio. The Omah Lay remix of “Forever” expanded her reach globally, while “My Diary” EP’s gold-certified track “Something” solidified her commercial appeal.
Her accolades include The Headies’ Best West African Artist award and she has performed at prestigious venues and festivals across the US, UK, Europe and Africa, including The Global Citizen Festival, The Great Escape Festival, Coca-Cola FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour and Afronation.
With “After Midnight” now available, Gyakie enters a new phase of her career equipped with a body of work that balances commercial appeal with artistic integrity, positioning her for continued growth on the international stage while celebrating her Ghanaian roots.
