Streaming platform Showmax has released several new titles targeting families during the current school holiday period, including recent blockbusters and original programming.

The lineup features “Wicked,” the musical film adaptation that received 10 Oscar nominations and became the highest-grossing musical film adaptation of all time. The platform has also added “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” which ranked as the 10th biggest box office hit of 2024 with an 85% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Original content includes “Iyanu,” an animated series drawing on Nigerian culture and mythology that has been green lit for a second season and feature films after ranking as the top series on Cartoon Network.

The show follows a teenage orphan who discovers divine powers in the ancient kingdom of Yorubaland.

Additional offerings include “Tiddler,” a 23-minute animated short based on Julia Donaldson’s picture book, which attracted over eight million viewers on BBC’s Christmas Day broadcast.

The platform has also added “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie,” marking the first fully animated feature length film in the franchise’s history.

Local content features new seasons of “Takalani Sesame,” the South African adaptation of “Sesame Street” available in multiple local languages. The series has previously won SAFTA and Peabody Awards, with the current season nominated for an International Emmy.

For older children, the platform offers “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” Tim Burton’s sequel that became 2024’s best-reviewed fantasy movie on Rotten Tomatoes and the year’s 13th biggest global box office hit.

The content expansion comes as streaming platforms compete for family audiences during peak holiday viewing periods.
